The last 4 seasons have been a real struggle for Liverpool with the team only managing mid table placings. Fourth place last year has been the best result they have had over the last couple of years.
Liverpool have waited a seriously long time to lift the prestigious Premier League title having last won it 29 years ago in 1990. It is safe to say that Liverpool’s many devoted fans have never seen their team win the title.
The pressure has been high, and everyone is hoping that Klopp is the man to land Liverpool a title. Klopp has been criticised in the past for his teams’ performances in finals and their failures to win titles having lost 2 Champions League finals which included losing to Bayern Munich in 2013 with Dortmund and Real Madrid last year with Liverpool.
To show how long fans have waited here are a few things that have happened since the last time Liverpool won the title.
Leicester City story
Leicester City have had a real up and down couple of decades since 1990 which includes being promoted to the top division, relegated and then being promoted again. This trend continued again resulting in the team being relegated twice before ending up in league 1.
Thereafter they were once again promoted to the Premier League where they had to fight against relegation. They then followed that up with the biggest upset in Premier League history by winning the coveted trophy in the 2015/ 2016 season. They have now become a household name in football.
4/5ths of the current squad was born
When looking at all the players in the current Liverpool Premier League team, only 5 players were born when Liverpool last won the title. Players Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet, James Milner and Daniel Sturridge were the only players alive and most of them were still toddlers.
Europe has transformed
The map of Europe has gone through a complete transformation. West and East Germany have become one with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since the end of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia has been broken down into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia amongst other smaller countries have broken away from what was then Yugoslavia. New countries such as Uzbekistan, Armenia and Ukraine have been established.
When Liverpool last won the league, it was branded as Football League First Division and only changed names to the Premier League in 1992. This means that Liverpool have not officially won the Premier League. Other leagues that have rebranded include the European Cup becoming the Champions league, the UEFA Cup becoming the UEFA Europa League and the Intercontinental Cup being rebranded as the FIFA Club World Cup.0
