THE SOUTHERN AFRICA FOUNDATION FOR THE CONSERVATION OF COASTAL BIRDS
Abbreviated as SANCCOB, the centre is situated in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. The purpose is not just to rescue and rehabilitate sea birds but to also to educate the public through various programs. Visitors can tour the rehab and education centre and experience nature through sound, sight and touch as well as see the volunteers helping to save the sea birds particularly the three main endangered species that occur and breed in Algoa Bay, the African Penguin, Cape Gannet and Cape Cormorant.
If your visit is timed correctly, one may witness the injured birds being released back into the wild as soon as they are well enough.
ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK
Less than an hour from Port Elizabeth is the third largest national park in South Africa, the Addo Elephant National Park. Self-drive day trips are available as well as overnight accommodation in the park in addition to surrounding Bed and Breakfast facilities. Animals in the park include, elephants, warthogs, water buffalos, ostriches, zebras, lions, kudus, meerkats, turtles, antelopes and many more.
Especially after a day at the sea or in the game reserves, a walk along the coast is worthwhile. Especially in Summerstrand, there are some beautiful wooden footbridges that meander through the sand hills and landscape. Hobie Beach offers the 137m long Shark Rock Pier which stretches out over the warm Indian Ocean offering great views of the city’s beachline. This has been the venue for Ironman South Africa for the past few years.0
